Standard for British Miniature Horse

General Impression: A small, sound, well-balanced horse, possessing the correct conformation characteristics required of all horse breeds. The general impression should be one of symmetry, strength and alertness, with athletic natural paces.
Size: A miniature horse must not measure more than 34 inches at the wither at maturity. Head: In proportion to length of neck and body. Broad forehead with large, prominent eyes, set wide apart. Comparatively short distance between eyes and muzzle. Profile straight or slightly concave below eyes. Large nostrils. Clean, refined muzzle. Even bite.
Ears: Medium in size, pointed. Carried alertly, with tips curving slightly inwards.
Throat-latch: Clean and well defined, allowing ample flexion at the poll.
Neck: Flexible, lengthy, in proportion to body and type and lending smoothly into the withers.
Shoulders: Long, sloping and well angulated, allowing a free-swinging stride and alert head-neck-carriage. Well muscled forearm.
Body: Well muscled, with ample bone and substance. Balanced and well proportioned, neither overweight nor artificially thin. Short back and loins in relation to length of underline. Smooth and generally level topline. Deep girth and flank. Trim barrel.
Hindquarters: Long, well-muscled hip, thigh and gaskin. Highest point of croup to be same height as wither. Tail set neither excessively high nor low, but smoothly rounding at the rump.
Legs: Set straight and parallel when viewed from front or back. Straight, true and squarely set when viewed from side, with hooves pointing directly ahead. Pasterns sloping about 45 degrees and blending smoothly, with no change of angle, from the hooves to the ground. Hooves should be round and compact, and well trimmed. Smooth, fluid gait in motion.
Colour: Any colour or marking pattern is equally acceptable. The hair should be lustrous and silky.

Standard for British Riding Pony

The BRP should possess a good, honest, attractive head with a bold, intelligent eye, well set on head and neck from the shoulder, with a good, prominent riding wither. It should have a flat, sloping shoulder with good length of rein, deep heart room and well sprung ribs. There should be sufficient depth through the loin, with enough scope to carry a saddle. The quarters should have sufficient length, with a well set on tail, with the hind legs correctly put on from the loin, giving a strong second thigh and a good, strong and clean hock.
The limbs should have sufficient bone to carry the body, with good, broad knees, short, flat cannon bone and the fetlock joints should be large enough to stand hard work. Also, there should be a good open shape to the foot, the pasterns being the correct length and angled at roughly 45 degrees to the ground. A show pony should have elegance combined with movement, with pony type, quality bone and sufficient substance. The action should be true, straight and floating, covering the ground with effortless ease.

Standard for British Spotted Pony

General Character: A quality pony with adequate bone and substance, hardy and active with real pony character of small, riding or cob type, up to and including 14.2 hh.
Breed Characteristics: All ponies must display some of the following: White sclera round the eye. Mottled skin. This part dark, part pink skin is usually most evident around the genitals, lips, muzzle, eyes and inside ears. Striped hooves.
Colour: Leopard – Spots of any colour on a white or light coloured background. Few Spot Leopard – White base coat with only a few spots. Strong characteristics often accompanied by varnish marks (groupings of dark hairs within an area, usually nose, cheekbones, stifle, gaskin and knee). Snowflake – White spots on a dark base coat. This colour can appear almost roan, but must show strong characteristics and often has varnish marks which distinguish it from an ordinary roan. Blanket – An area of white over hips and hindquarters, with or without spots. Any base colour. The blanket can extend over the entire back and shoulders. Piebald and skewbald markings of any kind are not eligible. Solid colours are eligible for a separate Register, but must be of proven spotted breeding and preferably show some breed characteristics.
Head: Full of quality and true pony character. Big, bold eyes set well apart. Ears should be well placed, small, neat and in proportion to the head. Prominent, open nostrils. Clean, well defined throat. A coarse head and Roman nose are to be discouraged.
Neck: Should have good length and be well carried. Moderately lean in mares, but inclined to be more cresty in stallions. Slightly heavier neck is allowable in the cob type.
Shoulders: Good, strong, sloping and well laid back. Withers should be well defined, but not knifey.
Forelegs: Should be set square and true. Not tied in at the elbow. Long, strong forearms with well developed knees. Short, flat bone below the knee. Pasterns of proportionate length and slope. Well shaped, dense hooves. The cob type should have a greater abundance of bone, without coarseness, and a moderate quantity of fine feather when in the rough.
Body: Muscular, strong, well coupled with plenty of heart room. Good depth of girth and well sprung ribs.
Hindquarters: Lengthy, strong, well muscled, not ragged or drooping, with well set on tail. Slightly finer in riding type.
Hind Legs: Well let down hocks, large, flat, clean bone, prominent points. The hock not to be set behind a line from the point of the quarters to the fetlock joint. No sickle or cow hocks. Pasterns to be of proportionate length and slope. Hooves well shaped and dense.
Action: Low, straight from the shoulder, free flowing. Hocks well flexed, with straight action coming well under the body. The cob type may show more knee action.

Connemara Pony

Characteristics: Good temperament, hardiness and staying power, intelligence and soundness, surefootedness and jumping ability, suitable for child and adult.
Height: 133 cms – 148 cms (14.2 hh)
Colours: Grey, bay, black, brown, dun, with occasional roan, chestnut, palomino and dark-eyed cream.
Type: Compact, well-balanced riding type with depth, substance and good heart room, standing on short legs, covering a lot of ground.
Head: Well-balanced pony head of medium length, with good width between large, dark, kindly eyes. Pony ears, well-defined cheek bones, jaw relatively deep, but not coarse.
Front: Head well set onto neck. Chest not over-loaded and neck not set too low. Well-defined withers and good sloping shoulder, giving a good length of rein.
Body: Deep, with strong back. Some length permissible, but should be well ribbed up, with strong loins.
Limbs: Good length and strength in forearm, well-defined knees and short cannons, with flat bone measuring 18-21 cms. Elbows should be free, pasterns of medium length, feet well-shaped of medium size, hard and level.
Hindquarters: Strong and muscular with some length, well developed second thigh and strong, low-set hocks.
Action: Free and true without undue knee action, but active and covering the ground.

Dales Ponies

General: A strong, active pony, full of quality and spirit.
Height: The preferred height range is 14 hands (142 cms) to 14.2 hands (147,2 cms).
Colour and Markings: Black, brown, grey, bay and roan. A white star and/or snip on the head. White fetlocks to the hind legs only. Mismarked ponies will be downgraded to the grading-up register.
Head: Neat and ponylike. Broad between the eyes, which should be bright and alert. Pony ears slightly incurving. Long foretop of straight hair down the face.
Neck: Strong and of ample length. Stallions should display a bold outlook with a well-arched crest. Throat and jaws clean-cut. Long, flowing mane.
Shoulders: Well-laid, long, sloping shoulders with well-developed muscles. Withers not too fine.
Body: Short-coupled and deep through the chest, with well-sprung ribs.
Feet, Legs and Joints: The very best of feet and legs, with flexible joints, showing quality with no coarseness. The cannons should display 8” – 9” (20.3 cms – 22.9 cms) of flat, flinty bone and well-defined tendons. Pasterns should be nicely sloping and of good length. Ample silky feather on the heels. Large, round feet, open at the heels, with well-developed frogs.
Hindlegs: Broad, flat and clean. Well let down with plenty of dense, flat bone below.
Forearms: Set square. Short and very muscular, with broad, well-developed knees.
Action: Clean, high, straight and true. Going forward on “all fours” with tremendous energy. The knee and hock are lifted, the hind leg flexed well under the body for powerful drive.
Character: True pony character. Alert, high-couraged, intelligent and kind.

Dartmoor Ponies

Height: Not exceeding 12.2 hh (127 cms)
Colour: Bay, Black, Brown, Chestnut, Grey and Roan. Piebalds and Skewbalds are not allowed. Excessive white markings should be discouraged.
Head and Neck: The head should be small with large, kindly eyes and small, alert ears. It should be well set on a good neck of medium length. The throat and jaws should be fine and showing no sign of coarseness or throatiness. Stallions should have a moderate crest.
Shoulders: Good shoulders are most important. They should be well laid back and sloping, but not too fine at the withers.
Body: Of medium length and strong, well ribbed up and with a good depth of girth, giving plenty of heart room.
Loin and Hindquarters: Strong and well covered with muscle. The hindquarters should be of medium length and neither level nor sloping. The tail should be well set up.
Limbs: The hocks should be well let down, with plenty of length from hip to hock, clean cut and with plenty of bone below the hock. They should have a strong second thigh. The fore legs should not be tied in at the elbows. The fore arm should be muscular and relatively long and the knee fairly large and flat on the front. The cannons should be short, with ample good, flat, flinty bone. The pasterns should be sloping, but not too long. The feet should be hard and well shaped.
Movement: Low and straight, coming from the shoulder with good hock action, but without exaggeration.
General: The mane and tail should be full and flowing. The Dartmoor is a very good looking riding pony, sturdily built, yet with quality. Ponies should be shown in a clean and natural state with full mane and tail.

Standard for Eriskay Ponies

Characteristics: Exceptionally amenable and easy to train; intelligent, not nervous; enjoys human company.
Height: 12.2 to 13 hands.
Colour: As foals they appear from a distance to be black, but some dark brown hair may be found in the coat. As they grow older they become lighter and from one year onwards they can be described as blue roan or iron grey. They become progressively lighter until they look white from between four to seven years of age. Some are slightly flea-bitten. An exceptional one will remain black, but otherwise the colour is constant even in most of the crosses. There are no eel stripes.
Head: Rather large and broad without being ugly.
Body: Very wide; deep chest and abdomen.
Legs: Fine bones, without feather, a small tuft appearing in winter.
Tail: Set low.
Coat: Ample and waterproof, without looking very “shaggy”.
Action: Small, energy saving steps, especially at the trot; easy, rather effortless “lope” when cantering. This economical action, along with the large chest, means that they do not tire or sweat easily, and are quite often swift for their size.

Exmoor Ponies

Height: The preferred height range is: Stallions and geldings 11.3 hh (119.4 cms) to 12.3 hh (129.5 cms) at maturity. Mares 11.2 hh (116.8 cms) to 12.2 hh (127 cms) at maturity.
General Appearance or Type: Definite “pony” character; hard and strong; vigorous and alert and symmetrical in appearance; mealy muzzle; “toad eyes”.
Head and neck: Ears short, thick and pointed; clean-cut face; wide forehead; eyes large, wide apart and prominent (Toad eyes); wide nostrils; mealy muzzle, clean throat; good length of rein.
Shoulders: Clean, fine at top, well laid back.
Chest: Deep and wide between and behind forelegs. Ribs long, deep, well-sprung and wide apart.
Back: Level; broad and level across loins; tail neatly set in.
Legs: Clean and short, with neat, hard feet; forelegs straight, well apart and squarely set; hind legs well apart, nearly perpendicular from hock to fetlock, with point of hock in line with pelvis bone, wide curve from flank to hock joint; legs free in motion, with no tendency to sweep or turn.
Action: Straight and smooth, without exaggerated action.
Coat: Summer – close, hard and bright. Winter – a double-layered, dense coat with an under insulating layer of fine, springy hair and an outer water-proofing layer of hard, greasy hair.
Colour: Bay, brown or dun, with black points; mealy colour on muzzle, round eyes and inside flanks; no white markings anywhere.
Quality: Alert expression and general poise indicating balance and symmetry of movement; fine, clean bone.

Fell Ponies

Height: Not exceeding 14 hands (142.2 cm). No lower height limit.
Colour: Black, Brown, Bay or Grey, preferably with no white markings, though a star or a little white on the hind feet is allowed. Chestnuts, piebalds and skewbalds are debarred.
Head: Small, well chiselled in outline, well set on, forehead broad, tapering to nose.
Nostrils: Large and expanding.
Eyes: Prominent, bright, mild and intelligent.
Ears: Neatly set, well formed and small.
Throat and Jaws: Fine, showing no signs of throatiness or coarseness.
Neck: Of proportionate length, giving good length of rein, strong and not too heavy, moderate crest in case of stallion.
Shoulders: Most important, well laid back and sloping, not too fine at withers, not loaded at the points – a good, long shoulder blade, muscles well developed.
Carcass: Good strong back of good outline, muscular loins, deep carcass, thick through heart, round ribbed from shoulders to flank, short and well coupled, hind quarters square and strong, with tail well set on.
Feet, legs and joints: Feet of good size, round and well-formed, open at heels, with the characteristic blue horn, fair sloping pasterns not too long, forelegs should be straight, well placed, not tied in at the elbows. Big, well-formed knees, short cannon bone, plenty of good, flat bone below knee, eight inches at least, great muscularity of arm. Hooves have distinct blue horn.
Hind legs: Good thighs and second thighs, very muscular, hocks well let down and clean-cut, plenty of bone below joint, hocks should not be sickle nor cow-hocked.
Action: Walk, smart and true. Trot well balanced all round, with good knee and hock action, going well from the shoulder and flexing the hocks, not going too wide or near behind. Should show great pace and endurance, bringing the hind legs well under the body when going.
Mane, tail and feathers: Plenty of fine hair (coarse hair objectionable), all the fine hair except that at the point of the heel may be cast in summer. Mane and tail are left to grow long.

Highland Ponies

Height: The height is 13 hh to 14.2 hh (132 – 148 cms).
Head: Well carried and alert, with kindly eyes. Broad muzzled and with a deep jowl.
Neck and shoulders: Reasonable length of neck going from wither with a good sloping shoulder and well placed forearm.
Body: Well-balanced and compact with deep chest with plenty of room for heart and lungs, ribs well sprung.
Quarters and hindlegs: Powerful quarters with well developed thigh, strong second thigh and clean, flat hocks.
Legs: Flat, hard bone; broad knees; short cannon bones, oblique pasterns and well shaped, broad dark hooves. Feather soft and silky.
Mane and tail: Hair should be natural flowing and untrimmed, with a full tail.
Colours: A range of duns, mouse, yellow, grey, cream. Also grey, brown, black and occasionally bay and liver chestnut with silver mane and tail. Many ponies have a dorsal stripe and show some zebra markings on legs and shoulder. A small star is acceptable, but other white markings are discouraged. Foal coat often changes and many ponies change colour gradually as they grow older, especially those with grey hairs interspersed with the original colour. Others show a slight seasonal change in colour between winter and summer coats. Broken colours are not allowed. Stallions with white markings other than a small star are not eligible for licensing.
Action: Straight and free moving, without undue knee action.
Capabilities: A ride, drive and pack pony and can adapt to many equestrian disciplines. Ridden classes are often split into two a) 14 hh and under b), over 14 hh.

New Forest Ponies

Height: The upper height limit is 148 cms. There is no lower limit, but New Forest Ponies are seldom under 12 hands (120 cms). They are normally shown in 2 height sections, 13.2 hands and under, and over 13.2 hands.
Colour: New Forest Ponies may be any colour except piebald, skewbald or blue eyed cream. Palomino or very light chestnut cream ponies with dark eyes are only acceptable as geldings or mares. Blue eyes are not permitted. White markings on the head and legs are permitted. White markings that occur behind the head and above a line parallel to the ground from the point of hock in the hind leg and the top of the metacarpal bone or bend in the knee in the fore leg are not permitted.
Type: New Forest Ponies should be of riding type with substance. They should have sloping shoulders, strong quarters, plenty of bone, good depth of body, straight limbs and good, hard round feet. The larger ponies, while narrow enough for small children, are quite capable of carrying adults. The smaller ponies, though not up to so much weight, often show more quality.
Action: This should be free, active and straight, but not exaggerated.
Temperament: The New Forest Pony has an ideal temperament and should be very easy to train.

Sonderregelung
Ab dem Jahr 2000 dürfen nur noch Hengste mit maximal 6,25 % Furzey Lodge Golden Wonder-Blutanteil gekört werden; ab dem Jahr 2010 gelten nur Ponys mit nicht mehr als 6,25 % Furzey Lodge Golden Wonder- Blut als New Forest-Ponys.

Shetland Ponies

Height: Registered stock must not exceed 40 inches (102 cms) at three years or under, or 42 inches (107 cms) at four years or over. Ponies are measured from the withers to the ground, by measuring stick, and a level stance, preferably concrete, should be used.
Colour: Shetland Ponies may be any colour known in horses except spotted.
Coat: The coat changes according to the seasons: a double coat in winter with guard hairs which shed the rain and keep the pony’s skin completely dry in the worst of the weather and, by contrast, a short summer coat which should carry a beautiful silky sheen. At all times the mane and tail hair should be long, straight and profuse and the feathering of the fetlocks straight and silky.
Head: The head should be small, carried well and in proportion. Ears should be small and erect, wide set but pointing well forward. Forehead should be broad with bold, dark, intelligent eyes. Muzzle must be broad with nostrils wide and open. Teeth and jaw must be correct.
Forelegs: Should be well placed with sufficient good, flat bone. Strong forearm. Short, balanced cannon bone. Springy pasterns.
Hindlegs: The thighs should be strong and muscular, with well-shaped, strong hocks, neither hooky nor too straight. When viewed from behind, the hindlegs should not be sett too widely apart, nor should the hocks be turned in.
Feet: Tough, round and well-shaped – not too short, narrow, contracted or thin.
Action: Straight, free action using every joint. Tracking up well.
General: A most salient and essential feature of the Shetland Pony is its general air of vitality (presence), stamina and robustness.

Welsh Mountain Ponies

Height: Not exceeding 12 hh (122 cms).
General Character: Hardy, spirited and pony-like.
Colour: Any colour, except piebald and skewbald.
Head: Small, clean-cut, well set on and tapering to the muzzle.
Eyes: Bold.
Ears: Well-placed, small and pointed, well up on the head, proportionately close.
Nostrils: Prominent and open.
Jaws and Throat: Clean and finely cut, with ample room at the angle of the jaw.
Neck: Lengthy, well carried and moderately lean in the case of mares, but inclined to be cresty in the case of mature stallions.
Shoulders: Long and sloping well back. Withers moderately fine, but not “knifey”. The humerus upright, so that the foreleg is not set in under the body.
Forelegs: Set square and true, and not tied in at the elbows. Long, strong forearm, well developed knee, short, flat bone below knee, pasterns of proportionate slope and length, feet well-shaped and round, hooves dense.
Back and Loins: Muscular, strong and well coupled.
Girth: Deep.
Ribs: Well sprung.
Hind Quarters: Lengthy and fine. Not cobby, ragged or goose-rumped. Tail well set on and carried gaily.
Hind Legs: Hocks to be large, flat and clean, with prominent points, to turn neither inward nor outward. The hind leg not to be too bent. The hock not to be set behind a line from the point of the quarters to the fetlock joint. Pasterns of proportionate slope and length. Feet well shaped, hooves dense.
Action: Quick, free and straight from the shoulder, well away in front. Hocks well flexed, with straight and powerful leverage and well under the body.

General Character: The general description of ponies in Section A of the Stud Book is applicable to those in Section B, but more particularly, the Section B pony shall be described as a riding pony, with quality, riding action, adequate bone and substance, hardiness and constitution and with pony character.

Height: Section C – not exceeding 13.2 hh (137.2 cms). Section D – no upper height limit.
General Character: Strong, hardy and active, with pony character and as much substance as possible.
Colour: Any colour except piebald and skewbald.
Head: Full of quality and pony character. A coarse head and Roman nose are most objectionable.
Eyes: Bold, prominent, set widely apart.
Ears: Neat and well set.
Neck: Lengthy and well carried. Moderately lean in the case of mares, but inclined to be cresty in the case of mature stallions.
Shoulders: Strong, but well laid back.
Forelegs: Set square and not tied in at the elbows. Long, strong forearms. Knees well developed, with an abundance of bone below them. Pasterns of proportionate slope and length. Feet well-shaped. Hooves dense. When in the rough, a moderate quantity of silky feather is not objected to, but coarse, wiry hair is a definite objection.
Middle Piece: Back and loins muscular, strong and well coupled. Deep through the heart and well ribbed up.
Hind Quarters: Lengthy and strong. Ragged or drooping quarters are objectionable. Tail well set on.
Hind Legs: Second thighs strong and muscular. Hocks large, flat and clean, with prominent points, turning neither inwards nor outwards. The hind legs must not bee too bent and the hock not set behind a line falling from the point of the quarters to the fetlock joint. Pasterns of proportionate slope and length. Feet well shaped. Hooves dense.
Action: Free, true and forcible. The knee should be bent and the whole fore leg should be extended straight from the shoulder and as far forward as possible in the trot. Hocks flexed under the body with straight and powerful leverage.
